Story Behind The Brand
Nakhsh is a brand built on a century of history, beginning in Khanaqin in 1912. It started with Mohammed Salih, who was born there and learned tailoring from his father, Mohammed Rahim. After years of training, he opened his own place and became known for his craftsmanship. He created shirts, pants, bags, wallets, and other pieces that defined tailoring in his time. He married at the age of 20 and had eight children. Although his health declined and he passed away in 1974, the roots of tailoring continued. Most of his children practiced the craft, but Layla became the most skilled among them.
Another path formed within the family art. One of the children discovered a talent for drawing and expression. His name was Ismail Khayat, who began by painting on walls and stones before taking his work to the rest of the world. His art became known for its colors, patterns, symbolism, and emotional depth. With over 1,000 paintings, international exhibitions, and a signature style, he connected Kurdish culture with creative expression. “Khayat” means tailor, and just like the name, the family balanced between creation with hands and creation with imagination.
In 2019, a new idea was formed to combine the tailoring legacy of the grandfather with the artistic vision of the father. That idea led to the birth of Nakhsh, created by Hayas and Hasara with inspiration from their mother Gaziza Omer’s artistic background. The goal was clear: bring Kurdish colors, patterns, stories, and identity into modern fashion. The brand’s name, Nakhsh, means “pattern” in Kurdish representing both design and identity.
At first, every piece was designed to be one of a kind, made for a single person to enhance uniqueness. Starting was difficult: entering the tailoring industry, building the first Kurdish clothing brand, and trying to stand out was a challenge. But the family’s history, passion, and identity kept the mission alive. The brand continued to grow, and customers connected with the concept of wearing something meaningful something that carries culture.
From a small place in Khanaqin to international audiences, Nakhsh evolved. With the support and collaboration of Dylan, operations expanded across Europe. This partnership allowed the brand to open its first official branch outside Kurdistan, located in the Netherlands. From there, Nakhsh now operates across European countries, managing production, export, and showcasing Kurdish art within a modern lifestyle.
Today, Nakhsh continues to create modern pieces inspired by traditional tailoring, symbolic colors, and artistic heritage. Each item reflects identity, history, and individuality because wearing Nakhsh means wearing a story.
